Mid Week Update

Happy Thursday friends :) As you can see I gave my blog a little make-over. I did this in hopes of getting the creative juices flowing. Instead, I ended up spending almost 2 days changing themes and configuring widgets. That is, in between the times WordPress wants to tell me that my password is invalid and not let me in at all. Ugh. I’m seriously considering going back to Blogger.

I took a little break from training last weekend and only ran 1 mile (7 miles were scheduled). It was a cut-back week so I’m not worried, and we all need a break every now and then, right?!  Lucy certainly had a fun weekend :)

This week has been going pretty good. No tummy issues!! The only problem I’ve had this week is that my foot pod is not working, yet again. It’s really not a big deal except that I like to be able to see all my stats on Garmin. All I’ve got this week is the treadmill summaries. Here’s how it’s been going:

  • Monday: Easy 5k run
  • Tuesday: 1:2 speed intervals x11 (3.3 miles)
  • Wednesday: 5k run of Level 5 hills

Today is an easy 5k run and tomorrow is my rest day. I have 18 miles scheduled for Saturday, and a 5-mile easy/recovery run on Sunday.

My weight these past couple weeks has been a steady 114 – 115, even after eating like a little piggy at my mother-in-laws last weekend. Granted, it was all veggies/vegan stuff, but I definitely over-indulged!

1/2 Sauer, 1/2 Kraut (Half) Marathon Recap

Sorry for the delay in posting this. It’s been crazy busy here this week. I had (gum) surgery on Thursday, and then I had to rush Lucy to the animal hospital on Friday. She’s okay. The vet said she has what’s called a “Reverse Sneezing” condition. It’s apparently quite common, but it’s such a scary sound she made that I thought she was having a heart attack or something :/ She did end up on a dose of steroids for allergies, and also has some post-nasal drip, but otherwise she’s just fine. On a side note – the last time we were there I was told she needed to lose 5-10 pounds. She gained 5! But the vet she saw this time said she’s just a little bit overweight and she looks okay.

In my pre-race post I shared that the course was being closed early due to the weather/heat. As I feared, I didn’t make the cutoff for the turnaround. In other words, I am still NOT a marathoner. Ugh. And this time I was completely prepared, ready and capable.

My 1/2 finish time was 2:29:30. I was pacing myself (I used :40/:20 intervals) for a 4:59:59 marathon finish, and I was right on target! Too bad they closed the turnaround chute at 2:20. As I crossed the (half) finish line, and saw that I wasn’t going to be able to go back out again I was pretty disappointed. For about 5 seconds anyways. it was SO miserably hot/humid, and that course was ROUGH. I wasn’t expecting those super narrow, HILLY, gravel trails!

Thankfully, because it was a half and a full, I was not a DNF! And I still earned a medal! It was my slowest half time ever, but like I said before, I was pacing myself for a full. And then again, considering the course and the heat I’m totally okay with my time!

I came home and immediately looked for another full. You know, I’m already all trained and everything! Then I thought about the heat and decided to start my search in September instead ;) And lookie what I found! The Sloppy Cuckoo (12 hour challenge) Marathon. It’s the same RD, the same park, the same German festivities Lol! And not only can I do a marathon; I can keep going for as many more 6.55 mile loops as I want/can for a total of up to 12 hours. I’m thinking about 50k, or a total of 5 loops. But I’ll be happy enough (ok, ecstatic!!) just to finish the marathon!

And speaking of marathons, my training buddy Tammy, DID finish her marathon!!! I couldn’t be more happy for her and so proud of her. You should stop by and congratulate her because she’s a super star!!!

Food and Fitness 3/10/15

Food Log 3-10-15

Today was cross-training day. I did a 1 mile warm-up walk followed by 20 minutes (1 mile) on the Arc Trainer. I hate that machine but it really is a good workout.

For dinner I made Spicy Baked Falafel burgers, and wow! They came out great! I’ll share the recipe tomorrow because I’m exhausted and going to bed now.

Tuesday Tails

This never-ending winter is really starting to get to me. So much so that I don’t want to do anything but eat and sleep. At this point I even dread taking Lucy for her walks because if I’m not slipping and falling on the ice on my own, she’s so strong that any amount of tugging is enough to make me fall. Today when I lost my balance on the ice, she got off the leash and went running after a poodle. There was no way I could run after her so I just started yelling “she’s friendly!!” at the top of my lungs. Unfortunately the poodle wasn’t, but luckily his owner remained calm, and there wasn’t any incident.  I’m not sure how I’d feel about a 90 pound bully breed charging at me!

As for today’s food and fitness:

  • Breakfast: Muesli with walnuts and unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • Lunch: Black Bean Sriracha Pasta
  • Dinner: Mexican no-meat Loaf with guacamole, salsa, corn, and Red Hot Blues (tortilla chips)

  • Workout: Today should have been cross-training, but I ended up leaving work early (snow/sleet AGAIN) so I didn’t go to the gym. After I got home, I jumped on the treadmill and ran 2 easy miles plus 1/2 mile warm/cool. And also walked 1 mile with Lucy, slip-sliding across the ice/snow.

Sunday Runday

Around here, every day is run day, but I try to do a little bit longer of a run on Sundays. Marathon training starts next month, but while I’m not training for anything, 10k is my usual “long” run on Sundays. I take it nice and easy while watching (Doctor Who) Netflix :) And Lucy has definitely gotten better about not trying to eat the treadmill while I’m on it! Hehehe

This morning’s weigh in was 116.4 and for dinner tonight I made Buffalo Cauliflower. I’m not sure where the recipe came from because I only took a picture of the ingredients and not the whole recipe. From there I just sorta “winged” it. Get it?! Winged it – Buffalo… yeah, never mind. *grin*  But anyways, talk about DELICIOUS!

I whisked together  3/4 cup brown rice flour, 1 cup water, 2 tsp garlic and 1 tsp paprika. Then I dumped a chopped up head of cauliflower into it, got it all coated, and baked it at 450* F for 30 minutes. Then I pulled it out of the oven and drizzled a cup of Frank’s Buffalo Sauce over all of it, and put it back in the oven for another 20 minutes. I ate 1/3 of it and could have easily eaten even more. Man, it was good!!

We’re supposed to get somewhere between 12 – 18 inches of snow between tonight and tomorrow night so I’m wearing my pajamas inside out tonight and hoping for a couple days off work!

I just hope the FedEx man can still get here with my new shoes! Lol!

Caution: Dog Can’t Hold Her Licker

What weighs 90 pounds (of peanut butter) and has a 3-foot long tongue? Ok, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but she really does have the longest tongue I’ve ever seen! Anyone (human or animal) that gets within range of that tongue, will feel the wrath of Lucy’s kiss attacks! As you can see, Bogey tolerates her pretty well… at least for a little while.

Today’s run almost didn’t happen. I’m still fighting this stupid stomach virus, and spent almost the entire day in bed. Finally, at about 8:15pm I took a shot of Imodium and jumped on the treadmill for a quick mile.

Weekly Wrap-up

Wow, it’s brutally hot outside today! TGFT! That would be “Thank Goodness for Treadmills!” My treadmill room has been a complete wreck for the last several months, but I spent most of yesterday getting it all cleaned out and rearranged. This morning I fixed the computer and got it running again, and then moved the treadmill so that I can now spend my long runs watching Netflix! Yay! And by giving Lucy her frozen Kong treat right when I was ready to get going, I actually made it 20 minutes before she started to mess with the treadmill and I had to lock her out of the room. Progress!



So here’s how this week went running-wise:

  • Monday: 3.27 mile run + 3 w/Lucy
  • Tuesday: 4 miles w/Lucy
  • Wednesday: 4 mile run + 1.5 w/Lucy
  • Thursday: 3 mile run (hills) + 1.5 w/Lucy
  • Friday: 3 miles w/Lucy
  • Saturday: 5 miles w/Lucy
  • Sunday: 5.52 mile LSR + 2.5 (so far) w/Lucy

I’m starting a new half-marathon training plan tomorrow so that I can help a friend train for her first half!  It’s a modified version of Hal Higdon’s Intermediate program, and is 12 weeks long. That makes the half marathon date 8/31, and leaves me with another 12 weeks  that I can up my long runs for the November 16th marathon!

I’m still under 120 (119.4 this morning) and doing pretty well with my food choices. It’s really easy when you eat basically the same thing every day. But that’s okay because I never get sick of my spicy bean concoctions, topped with homemade salsa and guacamole :)

April Summary and May Goals

So I didn’t quite make 100 miles, but I did come close (93.11 miles)! I ran at least 4 days/week. And I did dip back under 120 but unfortunately it didn’t last. I did end up with a .4 pound loss though! ;)

All in all, it was a good month. I tracked my food more than I had been, but still not daily, and not “every” single bite. So that’s my number 1 goal for May. I’m going back to logging everything at SparkPeople and at Weight Watchers. That’s what got me to goal weight in the first place, so that’s what I always revert back to. I’m also concentrating more on my food choices. I’ve eliminated the little bit of dairy I had been consuming, and the only thing keeping me from being 100% vegan is my coffee creamer. It is non-dairy, but contains casein. I’ve tried all the options, but nothing compares to my beloved Cafe Mocha. I will continue to work on that. Progress, not perfection!

I also want to add in some longer runs. At least a 10-miler, and hopefully a half marathon.  I’m thinking about signing up for the Bucks County Marathon on November 16th. It’s a smaller race that won’t have thousands of people, and it runs alongside the Delaware canal. My only issue is my tummy. I never know when my IBS is going to flare up, and that terrifies me! Sometimes I can’t even make it more than a mile around my neighborhood before “that feeling” overwhelms me :(  Anyways, I’m going to decide by the 16th of this month, as that will give me 6 months to train. There’s also a half marathon there the day before, so that’s an option too.

And now I’m heading back out with Lucy for another walk. It’s a beautiful day, and I can get more mileage in for the #MayMiles challenge at SparkPeople :)
